The final project for my mechanics of machine elements class was to design a transmission for a wheelchair. The transmission was intended to help wheelchair users that might struggle with steeper inclines by doubling their applied force to the wheels. Our project team accomplished this by designing a gearbox using SolidWorks that had a transmission ratio of 2. The design was also analyzed for stresses imposed on the gear teeth to determine the necessary face width of the gears. The gearbox design our team came up with also allowed the push rim to remain on the outside of the wheel ensuring ease of use.
